Product Description

Tetrapropoxysilane, also known as silicon tetrapropoxide or tetrapropyl orthosilicate (TPOS), is a chemical compound with the molecular formula Si(C3H7O)4. It is a colorless liquid that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of various silicon-containing materials, such as silica, silicon dioxide, and silicon carbide.

Tetrapropoxysilane is highly reactive due to the presence of four highly polarizable propoxy groups attached to the silicon atom. It undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of water to form silicic acid and propanol:

Si(C3H7O)4 + 4H2O → Si(OH)4 + 4C3H7OH

This hydrolysis reaction can be controlled to produce various types of silicon-based materials with different properties, such as sol-gels, ceramics, and coatings. Tetrapropoxysilane is also used as a precursor in the production of silicon-containing polymers and resins, and as a crosslinking agent in the synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid materials.
